The Director for Primary Mathematics at the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), Debbie Morgan, has played a key advisory role in the design of a new CBeebies series called Numberblocks which introduces the early concepts of number and counting to pre school-age children.
The first in the series of 30 five-minute episodes will be broadcast on Monday 23 January at 10:20 am. The series aims to help children develop a deep understanding of how numbers work through the use of animation, songs and games.
The series has been created by the multi-BAFTA winning Blue Zoo animation studio, who worked with Debbie Morgan from the early conception and design stages of the series, to ensure that the programmes were rigorous in the mathematics and in line with teaching approaches in schools.

NCETM supports the professional development of teachers of mathematics. It is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and managed by a consortium led by Tribal Education Ltd.
Laura Annis, Production Manager at Blue Zoo said:
“We approached the NCETM as recognised experts in maths education. The NCETM team supported the planning of the curriculum, to ensure that all aspects of early numbers were included to maximise the learning potential of the programmes.”
NCETM Director for Primary, Dr Debbie Morgan said:
“The consultancy was a really interesting project for the NCETM, we provided advice and feedback on many aspects of the programme, including the characters, the storylines, and aspects of the animation to ensure that the mathematics was clearly represented. We are enthusiastic and excited about the potential of these programmes to teach young children mathematical concepts in a fun way!”
